La Trobe Private Hospital boosts healthcare for Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

La Trobe Private Hospital has re-opened its doors, giving residents of Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs further vital access to healthcare and treatment.

The hospital, located at La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus, was officially reopened today by Assistant Minster for Health and Aging and Member of Parliament for Cooper, the Hon. Ged Kearney MP.

Healthscope has invested more than $25 million to completely redevelop the hospital, which now comprises 34 beds, including four operating theatres and a four bed High Dependency Unit. Clinical services offered at La Trobe Private include orthopaedics, general surgery, plastic surgery, and urology, as well as a new radiology clinic and consulting suites.

La Trobe Private will also expand and enhance Healthscope’s longstanding partnership with La Trobe University, providing additional clinical education placements for La Trobe students, as well as opportunities to receive quality professional learning experiences.

Plans for the opening of La Trobe Private Hospital were finalised in June 2021. "It's very exciting to see this hospital now completed and fully operational,” Healthscope CEO Greg Horan said.

“The redevelopment and re-opening of La Trobe Private will provide critical new healthcare services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing northern corridor, as well as continue our work to support and develop the next generation of healthcare professionals.”

The new facilities will also boost the research capability of La Trobe, strengthening its partnership with Healthscope that has already generated more than 60 publications in the past four years, many of which are co-produced with Healthscope staff and consumer representatives. La Trobe University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell, said; “La Trobe Private Hospital is driving healthcare innovation, as a place where world-class health care is combined with hands-on professional training and pioneering research. The hospital brings a wide range of health and education benefits to the local community while continuing to strengthen the University’s teaching, learning and research capability and excellence.”

La Trobe Private Hospital is a 34-bed hospital with a focus on orthopaedics, general surgery, plastic surgery, and urology. The hospital is located on the La Trobe University campus in Bundoora, adjacent to Plenty Road and public transport. La Trobe Private Hospital services are complemented by its sister hospital, Northpark Private Hospital located just minutes away.

Northpark Private Hospital offers a range of services, including ophthalmology, gynaecology, ENT and general surgery, maternity services including an early parenting unit. The hospital has recently opened its expanded 56 bed mental health service which includes a dedicated older person’s mental health unit.

February Update

Welcome to the new La Trobe Private Hospital.

We are incredibly excited to have opened the doors to our patients today.

Our team have done a terrific job to prepare the beautiful new La Trobe Private Hospital in Bundoora.

All our new areas are open, including our Day of Surgery Admission area, state of the art Operating theatres, private Patient bedrooms and ensuite, Discharge lounge and specialist consulting suites.

January Update

We're delighted to Welcome Suzy McLean as General Manager for La Trobe and Northpark Private Hospitals.

Suzy started her career in nursing, training in Intensive Care and Cardiothoracic specialities.  She then completed post grad qualifications in corporate management and business administration.    

For more than ten years Suzy has worked in executive teams for a number of private healthcare organisations on key brownfield developments and joins us from her previous post as CEO of a nearby hospital, where she was leading the site through the challenges of COVID, and overseeing the enhancement of its services.  

Suzy is delighted to join the Healthscope team. She is looking forward to using her expertise and experience to support and lead the reopening of La Trobe Private Hospital and the expansion of key services at Northpark Private Hospital.  

Suzy is particularly excited about forging strong working partnerships with current and new staff and doctors at both hospitals she is looking forward to ensuring both hospitals are positioned to provide best in class patient care and building a strong team culture.

Healthcare expansion in Melbourne’s northern suburbs

Melbourne’s northern suburbs will have even better access to healthcare from early 2024 with the reopening of La Trobe Private Hospital and redevelopment of Northpark Private.

A refurbished La Trobe Private will reopen with four integrated operating theatres, a robotic surgical assistant (ROSA) for specialised orthopedic surgery, 30 inpatient beds and capacity to open a new four-bed high dependency unit.

The La Trobe hospital will support a range of clinical specialties, focussing on orthopaedics, general surgery, plastic surgery and urology. The redevelopment will also include a new café, with onsite pathology and radiology services as well as 22 specialist doctor consulting suites. La Trobe Private Hospital is located on the La Trobe University Bundoora campus and the hospital will partner with the university on research projects and student placement programs.

The Northpark redevelopment includes expanded mental health services with brand new facilities. including additional mental health beds, a dedicated older persons’ mental health unit, expanded TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) service and more.

Northpark’s longstanding maternity service, and mother and baby unit will continue to operate at Northpark, alongside five operating theatres and a 20-bed surgical ward which will focus on women’s health, oral and maxillofacial, ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat (ENT) and endoscopy procedures.
